Roly Poly (Tilting Doll, Cheburashka) history.

The history of Roly Poly dolls is long, stretching from ancient times. To Russia it came from Japan, like the original Matryoshka, and to Japan Roly Poly figures arrived from China during the Edo period. This was traditional Tilting Dolls — Roly Poly. Daruma religion emerged it in Nagasaki related to Zen Buddhist schools. Daruma is the god of a syncretic religion, which embodies Bodhidharma bringing luck to a man. Bodhidharma's limbs were atrophied after nine years of meditation, so the doll has no arms and legs. The original Japanese tumbler toy is an ideal geometric shape of a sphere, it is inserted in the bottom of a bob, so she always gets up, as if it is not bent to any circumstances. Japanese Daruma dolls do have two white blank areas for eyes. The owner is naming a wish or goal, and colored one eye, and waiting then for help to achieve his goals. As soon as his goal or wish is achieved, the remaining eye is painted in. Usually by the end of a year, Daruma dolls are taken to the temple to be burned as Japanese tradition does it require.

Most Japanese Tilting Dolls are styled like red chilling demons. In contrast to the Russian Tilting Dolls, any Japanese Roly Poly do bear mustache and beard.

Read what Samuel Marshak wrote about one of your favorite childhood toys known as Roly Poly -- Vanka-Vstanka, or Tilting Doll!
And here is what a local historian S. Petrov wrote: A Teacher of Ulyanovsk University found that the famous fairy hero Cheburashka was his grandfather — a Volga barge hauler. In the old days cheburkoy, cheburahom and Cheburashka on the Volga River were unsinkable wooden balls towed to barges. From this round, and hollow object haulers came the idea to make toys for children. Wooden figures placed inside a sinker, depicting women and men, as two drops of water, like the well-known Roly Poly the origin of all wooden dolls.

A word from the dictionary of Dahl: "Cheburashka, Roly Poly, pupa, which is Whatever else getting itself on its feet. " Tumbler toys are the real ancestor of our Cheburashka.

Well, well!
